In short, they supplement The Tale of the Heike by relating what led up to its events and what followed them.

Great for my library!
Outstanding Translation by noted highly literate translator Royall Tyler. Am planning a trip to Japan to visit historical spots of literary importance.
I enjoyed this book as a supplement to the Heike Monogatori. However, as literature it is much inferior, lacking the drama and tragedy of that master work. It is also very difficult to keep track of who is who and which side they are on. But, if you like the Heike and medieval Japanese history, it is at informative and an opportunity to learn more about some fascinating characters in a very different world.
